MultiBit HD

MultiBit HD

The very first case of 'Recovery Wizards' as a project.

All the case studies were written with the clients' consent.

One of our team members attends regular morning yoga classes and during a casual group talk a topic of a new company formation came up. During the talk one of the classmates remembered having crypto on his old laptop that he cannot access. Back in the days, he bought crypto on BTC-e.com trading platform and deposited it into a multibit HD wallet; later he could neither remember the password nor find a file containing the seed.

Multibit HD has scrypt cypher for encryption, which is a brute-force resilient algorithm that is commonly used in crypto wallets. After signing all necessary documents the client extracted needed data from his laptop and sent it to our team. Since it has been many years, password hints provided were vague.

Our work with hints and heuristic permutations did not yield any results and as the cypher was scrypt such methods as searching all possible combinations for a common password structure were out of the question. Instead, we have requested additional information from the client regarding the way he usually composes passwords, and based on that information extrapolated some data from our enormous password database then used it as our work dataset.

Within a few days, our approach yielded the desired result — we have finally found the correct password!

A good thing to remember: crypto stored today could cost ten times or even hundreds of times more in the future. Always make a hard copy of your seed phrase!
